For real nature lovers we give here the main nature reserves in the north Norfolk Broads which allow visitor access though of course much of this National Park is kept away from tourists. We have provided links to sites which give more detail of Visitor Centres and opening times and details of what is likely to be found at different times of the year.
Ranworth broad
One of Norfolk’s most popular Broads with plenty to see and do for both families
and naturalists. A floating Broads Wildlife Centre is located at the end of an informative
boardwalk.
Hickling Broad
NWT Hickling Broad Raptor Roost
From October to March the raptor roost at Stubb Mill,
Hickling provides excellent views of raptors as they fly in to roost.
Martham Broad
This fabulous National Nature Reserve is one of the best sites in Broadland to see
the swallowtail butterfly, as well as an array of birds.
Barton Broad
The second largest of all the broads
Upton Broad
Most of the site is nationally and internationally recognised for its rich assemblage of wetland habitats and species.
Heigham Holmes
This is an almost secret island (only recently featured on ITV About Anglia), as it is only open for one day per year around September 19th, as it is managed as a nature reserve and access is only by single swing bridge. It was used in the Second World War as a secret landing strip for spy missions, and is now a very special nature reserve.
